Team Overview

Dan, Chris, and Alex met while they were students at the University of Minnesota. The three of them joined the solar car team, where they gained practical engineering experience. When Dan started the business in 2018, he invited Chris to join him. The two took on side projects while maintaining their full-time jobs. Alex joined the team towards the end of 2020. In July 2021, Dan transitioned to the business full-time. Chris joined him in November and Alex in December of that same year. The team grew in 2023 with the additions of Jason and Devon. All are passionate about their work, and clients enjoy working with them. 

Dan Hilgert

Dan discovered his passion for electronics during a racing simulator project while pursuing an Electronics Technician Degree. He Graduated from Ridgewater College in 2011 and went on to pursue an Electrical Engineering Degree at the University of Minnesota. Dan Graduated with a B.S in Electrical Engineering in 2016.

Dan is a versatile engineer that has strong problem-solving skills. He is experienced in many different areas including circuit and firmware design, electromagnetic compatibility, and agency compliance. His strong communication skills allow him to be an effective leader and follower.

Chris Owens

Chris graduated from the University of Minnesota in 2016 with a B.S in Computer Engineering.  Upon graduation, Chris spent 5 years working for KEB America where he quickly became the lead developer of their elevator control applications.  He is a founding member of Embedded Design Engineering and joined full-time in 2021.

Chris specializes in embedded firmware development but has also worked in various other software technologies. His passion is the creation of high-quality software that is readable, testable, and defect-free. Over the years he has learned the importance of leveraging modern tools and processes to assist with the creation of high-quality software. Chris spends most of his day writing software while continuing to advance Embedded Design Engineering’s software development process.

Alex Anderson

Alex graduated from the University of Minnesota in 2017 with a B.S in Electrical Engineering. He spent nearly 5 years working at Ford Motor Company working on powertrain controls software for EV and HEV transmissions. 

Alex enjoys watching a project come together through all the phases of development. Alex leverages his past experiences to continually improve the development process of gathering requirements, planning the project, iteratively developing features, and creating releases. Embedded firmware is Alex’s passion, he appreciates how it directly interacts with the physical world. 

Jason Judson

Jason started his journey in electronics by working as an Electronics Technician in the United States Air Force. After separating, he pursued a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and graduated from Kettering University in 2014.

Jason has a strong background in troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and hardware design from his work in the USAF and as a System Engineer for companies such as Magna and Samsung. He is passionate about creating high-quality, reliable PCB hardware and readable and concise firmware.

Devon Shustarich

Devon graduated from the Minnesota State University of Mankato with a B.S. in Integrated Engineering in 2016. Devon has worked as a software consultant for various clients with unique and demanding requirements since 2017.

Devon is an efficient and persistent developer with excellent research skills and a propensity for solving challenging problems. He has experience developing, implementing, and securing various software applications. As a member of the Order of the Engineer, it is important to Devon that projects are completed responsibly.
